How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh Longer — 10 Proven Tips

How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh Longer — 10 Proven Tips

A fresh bouquet can delight you for a week or longer — if you know a few simple care rules. Flowers usually fade not because of quality, but because of small mistakes: a dirty vase, warm water, direct sun or forgotten flower food. This guide shares 10 proven tips from the YUCCA Flowers florists to extend the life of your bouquet.

1. Cut the Stems at an Angle

Before putting the flowers in a vase, refresh the cut — use a sharp knife or shears at a 45° angle. An angled cut increases the surface through which the stem drinks and prevents it from sealing against the bottom of the vase. Cut under running water and repeat every 2-3 days.

2. Use a Clean Vase

Bacteria are the main enemy of cut flowers. Wash the vase thoroughly with soap before use. Even if it "looks clean," residue on the walls speeds up stem rot.

3. Add Fresh, Room-Temperature Water

Most flowers prefer room-temperature water. Cold water suits only bulb flowers (tulips, daffodils). Fill the vase 1/2–2/3 full — too high a water level harms stems with leaves.

4. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Strip off any leaves that will sit under water. Submerged leaves rot quickly, breed bacteria and shorten the bouquet's life. Keep the foliage above the water — the plant needs it.

5. Use Flower Food

A sachet of flower food usually comes with the bouquet — don't throw it away. If you don't have one, make your own: per 1 litre of water add 1 tsp sugar (food), a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar (acidity) and a drop of bleach (against bacteria).

6. Keep the Bouquet Away From Heat and Sun

Direct sunlight, radiators, the stove and any heat source speed up wilting. Place the vase in a cool, slightly shaded spot — the buds open more slowly and last longer.

7. Avoid Drafts and Air Conditioning

Air flow dries the petals and dehydrates the flowers. Don't place the bouquet in a draft or under an air conditioner or fan.

8. Keep Flowers Away From Fruit

Ripe fruit releases ethylene gas, which accelerates flower ageing. Don't put the vase next to a fruit bowl — especially apples and bananas.

9. Change the Water Every 1-2 Days

Fresh water and a clean vase are half the battle. Every 1-2 days pour out the old water, rinse the vase, refresh the cut and add clean water with flower food.

10. Mind the Specifics of Each Flower

  • Roses. If a bud droops, wrap the roses in paper and dip the stems in cold water for a couple of hours — they'll revive.
  • Tulips. They like cold water and keep growing in the vase. Wrap them in paper so the stems don't bend.
  • Hydrangeas. They drink through the stem and the "head" — mist the blooms and, if wilting, submerge them in water for 30 minutes.
  • Peonies. Buy them half-open; warm water helps the buds open faster.
