Are Flowers Shipped Internationally or Prepared Locally? Where Your Bouquet Actually Comes From

In most international flower orders the finished bouquet is not flown from the customer's country to the recipient's country. The order is passed to a florist in the destination city: flowers are selected there, the arrangement is made there and a local courier delivers it to the recipient. That is why you can be in the UK, order flowers for Barcelona — and have the bouquet made in Barcelona a few hours before hand-over, rather than two days earlier in London. Only the order details and the payment "travel" across the border; the flowers stay in the city where they will be handed over. How the whole system works is covered in how international flower delivery works; how to place an order is in the step-by-step guide. This article is only about the physical path of the bouquet itself.
Why Aren't Finished Bouquets Usually Shipped Internationally?
Freshness. A finished bouquet is the worst candidate for a long journey: cut stems without water, temperature swings in a cargo hold, a day at customs. What arrived would not look like the photo.
Delivery speed. When the bouquet is made where it is handed over, hours pass between arranging and delivery. International shipping means 2–5 days at best, and "same-day delivery" becomes impossible by definition.
Destination logistics. A local florist and courier know the city: which districts are pedestrian, where a hotel's service entrance is, how to reach a gated villa, which marina a yacht is in, how addresses like "3º B" work. A foreign carrier knows none of that.
Flowers are perishable. They need water, cool temperatures and as little handling as possible. The shorter the path from the florist's cold room to the recipient's hands, the better they look and the longer they last.
How the Local Preparation Model Works
Customer abroad → online order → destination city → local florist prepares the bouquet → local delivery → recipient
Three things cross the border: your message with the details, the payment, and the photo of the bouquet coming back to you. The flowers never leave the city where they will be handed over. This is how YUCCA Flowers works too: we take the order from any country and coordinate it with a florist and courier in the recipient's city.
What Happens to My Order After I Pay?
- Order details are received and checked: destination, recipient, date, address or hotel, special instructions ("surprise", "to the table at 20:30").
- The order is coordinated locally: a florist in the destination city takes it and confirms the flowers are available for the date.
- Flowers are selected and arranged — right before delivery, not the day before. You receive a photo before the courier leaves.
- Delivery is arranged — to a home, hotel, villa, restaurant or a yacht in a marina, where that type of delivery is available in the particular city.
Does Local Preparation Mean I Get Different Flowers?
Sometimes — in the details. The exact flowers depend on the destination, the season and local supply: peonies in Barcelona are available in May–June, while in October garden roses take their place; in Phuket orchids are year-round but tulips are rare. So:
- seasonal flowers may differ from the catalog photo by variety;
- substitutions are made in the same style, colour and price level;
- the colour palette and shape of the bouquet are kept — that is what the recipient sees first;
- if a specific flower is critical (white peonies for a proposal, the exact lisianthus from your wedding), say so in advance — we check availability before payment, not after.
Are Locally Prepared Flowers Fresher?
A careful statement is more honest than a loud one: preparing the arrangement closer to the delivery destination reduces the time a finished bouquet spends in transit. It does not mean every local bouquet is automatically fresher than every imported one — freshness also depends on the supplier, the florist's cold room and the weather. But all else being equal, "studio → courier → recipient" in three hours beats "studio → plane → customs → courier" in three days.
Advantages of Local Preparation
| International shipment of a finished bouquet | Local preparation |
|---|---|
| Longer transportation | Shorter final journey |
| Complicated logistics, customs | Local delivery |
| Difficult timing | Easier scheduling |
| Less suitable for hotel surprises | Easier hotel delivery |
| International transport | Destination-city delivery |
Can Locally Prepared Flowers Be Delivered to a Hotel?
Yes — for travellers it is the main scenario. The bouquet is made in the city where the hotel stands, the courier hands it to reception or the concierge, and staff carry it to the room — depending on the hotel's own procedures. You will need the guest's name as in the booking, the hotel name, the room number (if known — usually not needed), a phone number and the date. More: hotel flower delivery in Barcelona, which Seville hotels suit a surprise, Dubai hotels.
What About Villas, Restaurants and Yachts?
Villa. An exact address and access information are needed — the name of the urbanisation, the gate code, the name registered with security. See hotels and villas in Bali and a surprise at a hotel or villa in Ibiza.
Restaurant. The reservation time is what matters: the bouquet must reach the hostess before the guests arrive. See Mykonos restaurants and Phuket restaurants.
Yacht. You need the marina or port, the yacht's name and a contact on board — the captain or stewardess. See flowers to a yacht and Mykonos yachts.
What if the Destination Is an Island?
Ibiza, Mallorca, Mykonos, Santorini, Phuket — for islands local preparation makes particular sense: a finished bouquet does not need to be carried by ferry or plane onto the island on top of everything else. A florist on Mykonos makes the arrangement from what is already on the island, and the courier takes it to a hotel in Chora or a villa in Ornos. That does not mean island delivery is always faster than in a big city: distances between villages, ferry supply schedules and seasonal demand all affect timing — it is stated on each island's page.
Does Local Preparation Make the Order Less "International"?
No. The order remains international even if not a single flower crossed a border:
- customer: Germany;
- payment: a German card, in euros;
- destination: Italy;
- florist: Rome;
- recipient: Rome.
What makes it international is the customer and the recipient being in different countries, not the route of the bouquet. Flowers crossing a border add nothing to the gift — only days in transit.
Can I Request a Specific Flower?
Yes — roses, peonies, lilies, orchids, hydrangeas, seasonal flowers. But availability depends on the city, the season, the florist and local supply: peonies in spring and early summer, hydrangeas in summer, tulips in winter and early spring, orchids and roses almost everywhere year-round. If the flower you want is not available, we offer an alternative of the same level before payment rather than presenting you with a fait accompli. For rare items (protea, white lilac, ranunculus) allow 1–2 days for sourcing.
Why Local Florists Matter for International Delivery
An international flower delivery service does not need to carry every bouquet across borders. Its role is to connect the customer, the destination, the florist and the courier: check the details, find the right florist in the right city, agree the timing with the hotel or restaurant, send the photo and confirm the hand-over. The flowers themselves are made by people who know the local market and the local streets. That is how an order combines international service with local execution — and that pairing is exactly what YUCCA Flowers provides.
Examples
Barcelona. Customer in Germany → order online → bouquet made in Barcelona on the delivery day → handed to the reception of a hotel in Eixample under the guest's name.
Mykonos. Customer in the UK → order for a villa in Ornos → arrangement made by a florist on Mykonos → courier delivers at the agreed hour after notifying the villa manager.
Dubai. Customer in France → flowers arranged in Dubai → delivered to a hotel on the Palm or a residence in Dubai Marina; paid with a French card, priced in dirhams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are flowers shipped internationally? As a rule, no. The finished bouquet is made in the recipient's city; only the order details and the payment cross the border.
Where are international flower orders prepared? In the destination city — a local florist selects the flowers and makes the arrangement on the delivery day.
Are flowers prepared locally? Yes. That is the core model of international delivery: local florist, local courier, foreign customer.
Are locally prepared flowers fresher? Preparing close to the delivery point reduces the bouquet's time in transit. All else being equal — yes, but freshness also depends on the supplier and storage conditions.
Can I send locally prepared flowers to a hotel? Yes: by the guest's name and the hotel name, via reception or the concierge — depending on the hotel's procedures.
Can I choose specific flowers? Yes, subject to season and local supply. Critical wishes are best stated before payment.
What happens if a particular flower isn't available? We offer a substitute of the same style, colour and price level — before payment, with your agreement.
Can flowers be delivered internationally without shipping the bouquet across borders? That is exactly how it works: the order is international, the bouquet is local.
