Proposal and Wedding Flowers in Sintra: Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Penha Longa

Short answer: yes, we bring proposal bouquets and wedding florals to Sintra from our Lisbon studio — to Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Penha Longa Resort, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, Cabo da Roca and the ocean at Azenhas do Mar. A proposal bouquet is ordered 1–2 days ahead and handed to you personally at an agreed spot or delivered to your hotel; wedding florals are planned 3–6 weeks ahead with an on-site florist. Prices start at €82 per bouquet in the Lisbon catalog; Sintra delivery is priced at confirmation. Below: how Sintra is laid out, exactly where people propose and marry, and what to consider with flowers in the hills, fog and cobblestones.

Why Sintra is the proposal and wedding capital near Lisbon

Sintra is 30 km from Lisbon and a completely different climate: the Serra de Sintra catches the Atlantic clouds, so it's 3–5 degrees cooler, often misty and always green. On its slopes stand 19th-century palaces built by kings and romantic millionaires: the yellow-and-red Palácio da Pena on the summit, the mystical Quinta da Regaleira with its Initiation Well, the Moorish-Indian Palácio de Monserrate in a botanical park, the neoclassical Palácio de Seteais above the valley, the Castelo dos Mouros on the ridge. The whole landscape is a UNESCO site, and this is where couples from around the world come to propose and marry: destination weddings from the UK, US, Brazil and France, and increasingly Russian-speaking couples living in Lisbon and Cascais.

For floristry this means two things. First, Sintra's cool humid air is the best thing that can happen to a bouquet: peonies, garden roses and hydrangeas last longer here than in the heat of Alfama. Second, the logistics are demanding: mountain switchbacks, restricted access to the historic centre, car parks a kilometre from the palaces. So flowers for Sintra need planning, not a "within the hour" order.

How we deliver flowers to Sintra from Lisbon

Our studio is in Lisbon; Sintra is 30–40 minutes via the IC19 or A16, and Pena and Regaleira another 10–20 minutes up the Estrada da Pena switchbacks, where traffic crawls in summer and at weekends. What to know:

  • The historic centre (Vila Velha) around the Palácio Nacional is closed to most cars in high season — the courier parks on the approach and walks in over the cobbles. For central hotels this is built into the timing.
  • Pena Palace and the Castelo dos Mouros — a single narrow road up, shared with the 434 buses; you can't drive to the entrance, the courier walks up from the car park. We set the meeting at the Pena park entrance or the bus stop, not "at the palace".
  • Quinta da Regaleira — entrance on Rua Barbosa du Bocage, 10 minutes' walk from the centre; we meet at the ticket office.
  • Penha Longa, Monserrate, Seteais — separate entrances with security or reception; the simplest deliveries.
  • Cabo da Roca and the beaches (Adraga, Ursa, Praia Grande, Azenhas do Mar) — 15–25 minutes from Sintra towards the ocean; Ursa is reached by a footpath, and we don't carry the bouquet down — we meet at the top.

Timing: a proposal bouquet — order 1–2 days ahead, delivery in an agreed window (same-day is often possible for morning orders — check with the administrator). A wedding — book 3–6 weeks ahead. Sintra delivery cost is calculated at confirmation and depends on the point.

Proposal at Pena Palace

The most photographed spot in Portugal — and the most frequent request, "proposal at Pena Palace". How it works in practice:

  • You won't be allowed inside the palace with a large bouquet — the rooms have restrictions and the terraces are crowded. The classic plan: propose on the Queen's Terrace or by the Triton Arch with a compact bouquet (15–25 stems) you've brought with you — the courier hands it to you at the park entrance 20–30 minutes before you go up.
  • Pena Park — 200 hectares: the Vale dos Lagos (swan lakes), Cruz Alta (the highest point of the Serra with a view of the palace), the Chalet da Condessa d'Edla — it's quiet here, and this is where most "no witnesses" proposals happen.
  • Morning is best: the park opens at 9:00–9:30, there are few tourists before 10:30 and the mist still clings to the slopes — those are the "fairy-tale" shots.
  • Photographer: most couples hire a local photographer; we coordinate the spot and handover time with them so the flowers "appear" in the frame at the right moment.

For a Pena proposal we suggest a bouquet with yellow-and-red accents or, conversely, contrasting whites — to match the palace or to stand out against it. From the catalog: Pena Palace (€1770) — a luxury arrangement for those who want scale; Sintra (€324) — a compact option that's easy to carry up the switchbacks.

Proposal and wedding at Quinta da Regaleira

Regaleira is an early-20th-century estate with a Gothic palace, grottoes, underground passages and the Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) — a spiral staircase descending 27 metres. The atmosphere is mystical, and proposals here differ from Pena: not on a panorama but "in a secret garden".

  • Spots: the palace terraces, the Grutas (grottoes), the exit from the well at the Lago da Cascata, the Fonte da Abundância pavilion. Descending the well with a bouquet is awkward — better to present it at the top, by the exit.
  • Weddings: Regaleira hosts private events (run by the Fundação Cultursintra) — garden ceremonies and palace receptions are arranged by contract with the estate. We work as the florist contractor: bridal bouquet, boutonnières, arch and table florals — all coordinated with the venue's coordinator.
  • Flowers: Regaleira's Gothic stone and moss suit white-and-green palettes — garden roses, lisianthus, eucalyptus, fern — or deep burgundies.

Wedding at Penha Longa Resort

Penha Longa Resort is Sintra's main wedding venue: a 14th-century monastery (Mosteiro de Penha Longa), golf courses, gardens and a 200-room hotel in parkland between Sintra and Cascais. Dozens of destination weddings a year happen here; the venue is well-oiled and has its own coordinators.

  • Ceremonies — in the monastery courtyard, on lawns facing the Serra or in the chapel; receptions — in the monastery halls and on the terraces.
  • Our role: the bridal bouquet and a toss bouquet, boutonnières, bridesmaids' flowers, table and arch arrangements, petals for the ceremony, flowers in the couple's room for the wedding night. On-site assembly when the volume calls for it.
  • Guests from abroad: relatives who can't attend order a bouquet to the couple's room or the top table — delivered via the resort reception under their names.
  • Lead times: wedding florals are booked 3–6 weeks ahead, final details a week before; proposals at Penha Longa (for example on the Arola restaurant terrace or by the monastery) — 1–2 days ahead.

Monserrate, Seteais, the Castelo dos Mouros and other Sintra venues

  • Palácio de Monserrate — a Moorish-Indian palace in a botanical park of ferns and rhododendrons; Parques de Sintra hires it out for ceremonies and receptions. Ideal for couples who find Pena too touristy.
  • Palácio de Seteais — an 18th-century palace hotel with a terrace above the valley and a view of Pena; weddings, anniversary dinners, sunset proposals in the garden.
  • Castelo dos Mouros — 9th-century walls on the ridge with views of the palace and the ocean; proposals on the walls and lookouts — a compact bouquet, 15–20 minutes' walk up.
  • Palácio Nacional de Sintra — in the centre with its two conical chimneys; photos and a proposal on the square in front, then coffee at Piriquita with travesseiros.
  • Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of Europe, a lighthouse, sunset over the ocean; proposals here are windy — we make the bouquet dense and low so it doesn't "fall apart".
  • Azenhas do Mar — a white village on a cliff above the ocean; the Azenhas do Mar restaurant by the rock pool is popular for dinner after a proposal. Bouquet to the table via the manager.
  • Praia da Adraga, Praia Grande — beaches for sunset scenes; the courier meets you at the car park.
  • Hotels: Penha Longa, Palácio de Seteais, Lawrence's Hotel (the oldest hotel in Iberia, in the centre), Sintra Marmòris Palace, Chalet Saudade, plus the villas of Quinta da Beloura on the Cascais border — handover everywhere via reception or security.

Wedding floristry: what we do

  • Bridal bouquet — from photos, references and the dress colour; the Sintra classic is white peonies and garden roses with eucalyptus, "forest" greenery, or pastels to match azulejos. A toss bouquet on request.
  • Boutonnières, wrist corsages, hair flowers — to match the bouquet.
  • Ceremony — an arch or asymmetric installation, petals on the aisle, chair flowers.
  • Tables — low arrangements, greenery runners, candles; for the Penha Longa monastery — long tables, for Monserrate's gardens — light, meadow-style.
  • The couple's room — a bouquet and petals for their return.
  • Flowers for guests and parents — from relatives abroad.

Weddings are quoted individually: send the date, venue, number of tables and references — we'll price it and suggest 2–3 palette options. For how we work elsewhere, see luxury bouquets in Monaco and Dubai and our wedding floristry page for Lake Como weddings.

Proposal scenarios: how we coordinate

Bouquet into your hands

The courier meets you at an agreed spot (Pena park entrance, Regaleira ticket office, Cabo da Roca car park, hotel lobby) 20–30 minutes before the moment. You walk to the spot with the bouquet; your partner suspects nothing. 80% of couples do it this way.

Bouquet waiting in the room

You propose at a viewpoint, and flowers, petals and a card are already in your room at Penha Longa or Seteais. Arranged with the concierge.

Bouquet to the table

Dinner at Azenhas do Mar, the Seteais restaurant or Arola — the bouquet is with the manager and brought out with dessert.

Photographer + flowers

We give the photographer the courier's contact so the bouquet appears at the right second and makes it into the "before/after" series.

Ordering flowers to Sintra from another country

Most couples plan a Sintra proposal or wedding well ahead and from afar. Order on WhatsApp or Telegram: the date, the venue (palace/hotel/restaurant), the meeting time, your bouquet from the Lisbon catalog or references. Payment — Visa/Mastercard/Amex from any bank via a secure link, bank transfer (SEPA/SWIFT, Wise, Revolut), Apple Pay / Google Pay or crypto; prices in euros. A photo of the bouquet before dispatch; confirmation after handover. For weddings — a contract, deposit and final settlement after approval. More on payment and addresses: how to send flowers to Lisbon from another country.

What information do we need for a proposal or wedding in Sintra?

  • Date and time of the moment; for Pena — your ticket entry time, for Cabo da Roca — sunset time.
  • Meeting point — park entrance, ticket office, car park, hotel lobby, or restaurant and booking name.
  • Who receives the bouquet — you personally (surprise) or the recipient directly (then their name and phone).
  • Size and palette — bearing in mind the bouquet will be carried up switchbacks or over cobbles.
  • Photographer — contact, if we coordinate the handover moment.
  • For a wedding — venue, coordinator, number of tables, dress/palette, timeline of the day.
  • Weather — Sintra has mist and wind; we'll suggest resilient flowers (roses, hydrangea, lisianthus) and wrapping.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver flowers to Sintra? Yes, from our Lisbon studio via the IC19/A16 — to Sintra's palaces, hotels, restaurants and viewpoints, as well as Cabo da Roca and the beaches. Delivery cost is calculated at confirmation.

Can I propose with a bouquet at Pena Palace? Yes. The courier hands you the bouquet at the park entrance 20–30 minutes before you go up; you won't be let inside the palace with a large bouquet, so we recommend a compact format (15–25 stems). The best time is the morning before 10:30.

Do you do wedding florals at Penha Longa? Yes: bridal bouquet, boutonnières, ceremony and table florals, flowers in the room. Booking 3–6 weeks ahead, final details a week before; coordinated with the resort's coordinator.

Can we marry at Quinta da Regaleira and order flowers from you? Regaleira hosts private events by contract with the estate; we work as the florist contractor and coordinate the florals with the venue's coordinator.

How far ahead should I order a proposal bouquet for Sintra? 1–2 days. Same-day is often possible for morning orders — check with the administrator. A wedding — 3–6 weeks.

How will the courier find us at Cabo da Roca or the Castelo dos Mouros? We agree a spot — the Cabo da Roca car park or the castle entrance — and a time; the courier calls 10 minutes before arriving. We don't take the bouquet up the trails or into the castle — we meet at the entrance.

Which flowers suit Sintra's mist and wind? Roses, hydrangea, lisianthus, eucalyptus — they handle humidity and wind. For Cabo da Roca we make the bouquet dense and low. Sintra's cool air is only good for flowers.

Can I order a bouquet to the newlyweds' room if I can't attend the wedding? Yes. Give us the hotel (Penha Longa, Seteais, etc.), the couple's names and the date — we deliver via reception and send a photo and confirmation.

What can I order for a proposal for €150? A compact elegant bouquet that's easy to carry to a viewpoint: Miradouro €146, Bairro Alto €132, Chiado €107. Sintra delivery is added to the price.

Can I order from another country and pay by card? Yes. Order on WhatsApp, pay by any bank card, transfer, Apple/Google Pay or crypto in euros; photo of the bouquet before dispatch. For weddings — a contract and deposit.
