A Car-Free Village: How Zermatt's Logistics Work

Since 1961 no cars have been allowed into Zermatt. They stay in the multi-storey car park in Täsch, five kilometres below, and a shuttle runs every 20 minutes — 12 minutes to Zermatt station. In the village only small electric taxis and hotel electric buses, the horse-drawn sleighs of Mont Cervin Palace and bicycles move about; not even an electric taxi fits into the lanes of Hinterdorf. What to See: Gornergrat, Sunnegga, Glacier Paradise and Schwarzsee

Gornergrat (3,089 m) — the 1898 cog railway from the station climbs in 33 minutes to a panorama of 29 four-thousand-metre peaks and the Gorner glacier, the second largest in the Alps. On the way are Riffelalp station with its resort hotel at 2,222 m and Riffelberg; below Rotenboden station lies the Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn reflects in the water on a windless morning. Sunnegga (2,288 m) — the funicular from Steinmatte takes three minutes through a tunnel to a sunny terrace with the Leisee lake and the Wolli children's park. This is the start of the Five Lakes Trail — the Stellisee with the most famous reflection of the mountain, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee, two and a half hours — and the path down to Findeln and its restaurant terraces. Higher up are Blauherd and the Rothorn (3,103 m).

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3,883 m) — Europe's highest cable-car station: from Winkelmatten via Furi and Trockener Steg to the Klein Matterhorn, the glacier palace inside the ice, a viewing platform facing 38 four-thousanders and summer skiing. Crossing to Cervinia in Italy and back is a day trip.

Schwarzsee (2,583 m) — a lake with the chapel of Maria zum Schnee at the foot of the Matterhorn and the start of the trail to the Hörnli hut (3,260 m), from which climbers leave for the summit at four in the morning. The Glacier Express — the panoramic train from St. Moritz via Andermatt and the Oberalp pass, eight hours and 291 bridges, terminates in Zermatt. The Omnia sits on a rock: entry is via a tunnel and lift from Bahnhofstrasse. Riffelalp Resort at 2,222 m is reachable only by the Gornergrat train — we hand the bouquet to hotel staff at the train departure. For a check-in surprise give us the arrival date; you receive a photo of the finished bouquet before the courier leaves.

Chalets and apartments. Houses in Zermatt have names — Chalet Alpenrose, Haus Bergfreude — and often stand without a number in a lane. We need the house name or street and number, the surname on the letterbox and the recipient's phone: there's no concierge, so the courier calls 15–20 minutes ahead. If the recipient is on the slopes, we meet them at the Sunnegga or Glacier Paradise station or agree an evening window. We never leave flowers at the door in the frost.

Winter Zermatt is frost outside and dry, warm air inside; summer Zermatt is cool nights and hot terraces. A Three-Day Plan

Day 1 — Dorf and the Gornergrat. The morning train up the Gornergrat for sunrise, down to Rotenboden and the Riffelsee, lunch at Riffelalp, then Bahnhofstrasse, the Kirchbrücke at sunset and dinner at Schäferstube. A bouquet in the room for the return is the classic first-day move.
